High entropy alloys are typical "concentrated solid solutions" that differ from traditional alloys "dilute solid solutions" and have five main characteristics:
【1】good high-temperature stability;
【2】 Low temperature and high toughness;
【3】 Anti radiation swelling rate;
【4】 Slow diffusion effect;
【5】 Low grain boundary energy and stacking fault energy.
Up to now, high entropy alloys with face centered cubic (FCC), body centered cubic (BCC), and closely packed hexagonal (HCP) structures have been discovered. As a result, ternary and quaternary alloys can also form simple disordered solid solution structures. Compared to traditional alloys, ternary or quaternary alloys with atomic ratios have significantly higher mixing entropy than traditional alloys, indicating a high mixing entropy. The precipitates present in some high entropy alloys can enhance the strength and creep resistance of the alloy.
High entropy alloys have excellent properties that traditional alloys cannot match, such as high strength, high hardness, high wear and corrosion resistance, high thermal resistance, high resistivity, resistance to high-temperature oxidation, and resistance to high-temperature softening. Therefore, they will have very good application prospects in nuclear materials, coating materials, low-temperature structural materials, thermoelectric materials, superconducting materials, and aerospace materials.
